The trap of active inertia

Active Inertia.

It's that state of being when faced with a problem or a new situation, you do more of something 'tried and tested' with greater intensity.

This something is usually an approach that has worked in the past or in a different context but is probably not the best for the problem at hand.

You are so busy with action that you hardly have time for reflection. The high intensity of effort gives a false belief that you are doing your best and this would resolve the situation.

Yet, you stay in the same place.

Two steps to keep Active inertia away:

1. Carve out some time for deep reflection. Year end is a good time.

2. Seek external perspective. At times you may not know that you are not moving but others can see it clearly.

Winds do change. And when they do, just rowing harder does not help. You must adjust your raft.
