As a CxO or senior leader, you need to be judicious about trade-offs between:
1. Run the business of today
2. Transform the business for tomorrow
#1 is relatively easy. Most people grow through the ranks doing this well.
#2 is where many flounder, because it's not business as usual.
Those who do well on #2 are extremely thoughtful about when and where they deploy the three most critical resources that leaders have at their disposal:
1. Time: their own dedicated time to lead from the front
2. Talent: finding and supporting the best person in the org to do/drive something
3. Third party: getting outside expertise (e.g., consultants) for skills and expertise that are scarce internally
Many do not get this right.
They spend a disproportionate amount of their own time doing things that can be done better by someone else. Or delegating things that must be done by them. Or trying to build expertise internally that can be easily hired from outside.
In all of these cases, you are simply wasting time and resources while opportunities pass by you.
