Connecting your work to the CEO’s metrics

I was talking to a senior person in a large organization the other day.

Was stunned by how little he knew about the key metrics for his company beyond the function that he led.

Obviously, he also struggled to clearly articulate how the work that his team was doing contributed to the organization's key performance metrics.

Irrespective of the role or the level, we all need to know and be able to articulate how the work we do translates into the metrics that the CEO of the organization would care about. For e.g., for a typical corporate, these metrics would be revenue and profitability.

It's not easy to draw this connection, especially for folks in support functions or those who are early in their careers. It may not even be appreciated by your seniors in some cases.

Yet, doing this exercise proactively without anyone asking you to do is quite revealing. It forces you to constantly question what you are doing and the tangible value it is bringing to the organisation. Armed with this knowledge, you can ask for more/different work, more money, more growth. And will know quickly when a role or organisation is making you stagnant.
