Strategy & Execution

When fail fast becomes an excuse

Some jargons sound cool but tend to get abused horribly.

One such is ‘Fail Fast’.

This is a wonderful concept for a small start-up where the feedback loop between action and results is generally short. And so is the cash required to sustain something for long.

This is a terrible concept to follow mindlessly in large corporations where the feedback loop between action and results is typically long, scale of execution is large, stakeholders are multiple, and complexity is high.

In such environments, when you hear Fail Fast, know that 80% of the times it is just an excuse to cover up sloppy thinking and poor planning.

On a related note:

In a world that glorifies Fail Fast, I sense an increasing number of smart and thoughtful individuals are adopting the philosophy of 'Succeed Slow'.
