Strategy & Execution

Stop counting while you are playing

For anything of significance, you can't be continuously counting the results while doing it. That is a recipe for mediocrity. Allow me to explain.

The most important performance indicator for the CEO of any listed company is their stock price. Yet, CEOs don't track it every moment and for every decision that they make in the course of a day.

The best runners usually don't keep a minute by minute track of their speed or distance covered. They know the finish line and have a strong mental process to support their running. Then they just run, making adjustments as required by the track, weather, etc.

The pattern for top performers in any field is:

1. Have a clear goal and purpose in mind

2. Follow a well-honed process to achieve the goal. This is where skill, discipline, and consistency matter

3. Carry a mindset that allows minor adjustments in the process based on the context

4. Track progress only at pre-set intervals - not every moment - and make changes as required.

Bottomline: when in the game, you have to be clear about your goals and disciplined about your process, without worrying every moment about the outcome.
