Leading People

Leadership and its contradictions

Some leaders are remembered for their strength. Others for their ideas.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee is remembered for both—and also for his contradictions.

Much of my free time this past week went into reading ‘The Believer’s Dilemma’ - the concluding part of two-volume biography of Vajpayee by author Abhishek Choudhary.

This is not your usual heavy political biography. The research behind the book is deep, but the writing flows almost like a thriller—part history, part story, part quiet observation. You feel as if the man is being revealed layer by layer.

The book shows Vajpayee constantly negotiating between belief and pragmatism. A lifelong swayamsevak who reached out to opponents with warmth. A nationalist who ordered the nuclear tests, yet extended a hand of peace to Pakistan. A poet who led a 24-party coalition and somehow held it together.

#Leadership here is not painted as clarity alone. It is compromise, resilience, and the ability to hold contradictions without being consumed by them.

***

It’s a remarkable #book for anyone curious about how belief, character, and circumstances shape leadership.

I had been waiting for this book since finishing the first volume in 2023. The two books together are also an excellent refresher of the political history of modern India.

With this series, Abhishek firmly establishes himself as one of the finest biographers of our generation. He masterfully blends together deep research, engaging story telling, balanced perspective, and a wizardry with words - like few others I have read.

Highly recommended!
