At #KBR park today morning. Warming up for my morning run.
A stranger strikes a conversation. We were wearing the same brand of trackpants. It's a brand I like and, I figured, he loved as well. It's a relatively lesser known brand. Not a Reebok or a Nike. We get talking and decide to run together.
Almost halfway through the run, I regret my decision. His pace is slower than mine. Should be wiser next time, I tell myself and keep running. I typically do one lap of 4 kilometres. Enough to keep my Sunday sane.
After the first lap, this person pushes me to do a second lap. I reluctatntly agree. I struggle during this lap - have not done over 5 KMs in a long time, and it's showing up on my pace and stamina. Yet, we somehow manage to run the entire stretch.
At the end of the run, as I waive off my new friend, I feel happy about completing two laps. Also a bit stupid about undermining his abilities.
Sometimes, you need to change the lens with which you look at success to be even more successful. For me, the lens was speed. For him, it was distance. I am glad I changed mine.
As seasoned runners say - " If you want to go fast, run alone; if you want to go far, run together".
Can't agree more.
