As a country, independent India has had its fair share of ups and downs.
I believe that our best is yet to come.
Our Republic day holds a special place in my heart.
To my simple mind, Republic is an evolved form of democracy where the power is vested not just in people but in the laws that people have created for themselves.
Which means it's not always the majority that rules but the assimilation of best ideas that represent views, needs, and aspirations of a diverse set of people - howsoever small their numbers or economic might.
India is special because of its diversity in innumerable forms - geographical, cultural, cognitive, linguistic, just to name a few.
Our Constitution brilliantly stitches together this diversity while keeping intact our unique ethos, values, and culture that have evolved over millennia.
In my opinion, making of the Indian Constitution is one of the most under-rated historical events of the modern world.
Our 71 years of being a republic is proof that, nothwithstanding minor blips here and there, we have done a damn good job of managing ourselves.
That also is my reason for being an eternal optimist about our future, what if a bit irrational at times.
Happy Republic Day!
