My first performance review at #McKinsey was less than flattering.
I was advised that in meetings, I should speak up more and challenge others. We all have an 'Obligation to dissent' - I was told.
To a fresh graduate used to taking the words of seniors and teachers as gospels, this was surprising. And superfluous.
Yet, I started following the advice.
It felt odd initially. At times embarrassing.
But once the initial inhibitions were gone, I found it to be very liberating and empowering.
With some practice, I got better at knowing when to dissent and when not to. Dissenting just for the sake of it could result in more work just to 'Prove your hypothesis'.
Over years of practice, obligation to dissent has evolved into 3 important skills that continue to serve me today:
First, knowing which battles to fight. Only a few battles promise the impact that is worth fighting for. Others just satisfy egos and sap energy.
Second, the ability to speak the #truth to those in power. Sadly, not many do it. When you choose your battles carefully, you have the moral courage, energy, and credibility to win them.
Third, HOW to speak the truth so you do not alienate others from your cause.
To dissent, thoughtfully, is an obligation indeed!
