Decoding the out-of-office message

101: How to decode automated out of office messages.

1. Short message with the dates they are away and how/who to reach for anything important --> Average guy like you and me.

2. Long message with a list of 10+ people that one can reach out to in their absence, for the 100+ responsibilities this person handles --> Fake-it-till-you-make-it guy trying hard to impress everyone, even when not at work.

3. No out of office message -->I-have-arrived guy. If you are a nobody in the organisation, you wont ever know whether this person is away or at work because you never hear back from them. If you are a somebody, they would write back to you telling you they are away. If you are important, they would connect you to someone who can do what you requested. And if you are really important, they would just do what you asked them to, and some more. For you, they never went on that vacation!
