Life & Perspective

Fiction brings us closer to reality

Fiction, they say, is an escape from reality. Not really.

It gets us closer to reality by transporting us to a different world and re-igniting nerves that help make sense of the world around us.

I recently chanced upon the book 'The Little Prince' written, supposedly for children, by French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Read it twice. Back to back, over a weekend.

The book was written 80 years back, in 1942. It resonated as if it was written for our times. Reaffirmed my belief that things that make humans tick are timeless.

It's a tale of life, love, longing, meaning, death and everything in between, interspersed with a wealth of wisdom that makes you pause and think almost on every other page. An eclectic mix of philosophy, humor, mystery, and plain story telling that lights up your imagination as you read it so you can continue to ponder over the many questions that the book leaves unanswered as you finish it.

This is one children's book that I recommend every adult must read. As the book says "All grown-ups were once children... but only few of them remember it.” At one point in the book, the little prince quips - “Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.”

Perfect read for a lazy winter morning, when you feel like disconnecting from the outer world and need an aid to dive deeper into your inner self.

Sample some quotes from the book in the pics.
