The trust premium

Someone cheated me of some money the other day.

I felt hurt.

After a while, I realized in a moment of reflection that it was not the loss that was hurting me. In fact, it was a small amount that I would usually fritter away without much thought.

What was hurting me was that feeling: how could I be so stupid? Why did I not see this coming?

And then I had to remind myself of my own life philosophy:

Getting cheated or surprised once in while is the small trust premium you pay.

Why would you pay this premium, you may ask?

Because, in 99% of cases, trust brings out the best in people.

More importantly, it saves us a lot of mental energy we generally spend in evaluating trivial transactions. That energy can be deployed to better evaluate non-trivial transactions and decisions that really matter.

I willingly pay insurance premiums to help my insurance company underwrite their losses and buy myself 'peace of mind' for that one unfortunate event.

Similarly, I am ok paying an occasional trust premium to underwrite my own cheat losses and buy myself daily 'peace of mind'.
