Life & Perspective

Who gets your time as you grow older?

Who will you spend most of your time with?

This chart does not tell anything that we don't know intuitively.

Yet, it triggered a few thoughts:

[1] As you age you are going to spend increasingly more time with yourself. That does not necessarily mean being lonely. But how well you enjoy your own company will determine a lot of your well being.

[2] During mid-life, your time - and mental bandwidth - is almost equally divided between your partner, children, and co-workers. But things change drastically in later life when time with your partner increases disproportionately. The quality of mutual trust and relationship you nurture during your peak - and busy - years would likely be the second largest determinant of your happiness in later life.

[3] Time with children will drop suddenly, generally when they go to college. So, as much a nuisance as they may seem while they are with you, it's worth relishing the time while you still have them with you.
