The individual game inside a team sport

Inspired by #KingKohli and team India's performance yesterday, I scored my personal best on one of my running parameters today.

Running is an individual sport. You compete against yourself.

Team sports are different. Mastering your own craft is just the beginning. To be a winner, you have to take your team along and have to constantly navigate the ever-changing dynamics of the competition and the context

Cricket is unique.

It has all the ingredients of any team sport. But at the same time, I think it is also an intensely individual sport. Every ball that is thrown and played is as much a mind game as it is an opportunity to display the finest of your craft. The pause between the balls gives you an opportunity to strategize, make calculated bets, challenge your own limitations, and win the mind game while being cognizant of the context and other dynamics.

Imagine what must be going on in Kohli's mind when he hit the ball for supposedly a six but got dismissed just short of his personal century and India's win. All that while being aware that the whole country was rooting for him in that moment and that he is being watched live by a record audience!

It's moments like these that make sports so facinating and inspiring!

Well...except for that #Clubmahindra advert in between that made the kids watching the match, including my own 7 year old, ask their dads that wicked question - "Papa, when are you becoming a good father?" "Not anytime soon", was my curt reply!

#MarriottBonvoy, are you listening?
