Two e-commerce packages containing Diwali clothes arrived yesterday.
Triggered memories of my childhood.
Growing up in a middle class family in a small town, Diwali was one of the only two occasions during the year, the other being Holi, when we would get new clothes.
And this was an elaborate affair.
The process would start around Dussehra when my father, a government servant, would receive his annual bonus.
The trip to the clothing store in the main market on a rickety rickshaw was an excuse to visit the only decent restaurant that would sell sweets, samosa, and guess what - Masala Dosa - in that quaint little town of North India.
Back at the clothing store, on occasions when his mood was good and our total bill was high, the sethji would order cold drinks for us - perhaps the only time during the year when we would be treated to a limca or thums up!
Going to the busy neighborhood tailor for measurements was an experience in itself. He would always insist - and parents would willingly agree - on stitching it loose so we do not outgrow the clothes soon. Waiting for 10+ days for him to deliver was completely normal. On one occasion, the tailor's assistant over-ironed and made a small hole in the finished garment. He generously offered to do a quick 'raffu'. I was happy that I would at least have my new clothes in time. Parents did not complain either.

The slow life, simple choices, and small pleasures of the past - they won't return. But the nostalgia will sure last a lifetime!
Happy Diwali 🪔🎇
May the light in our homes, hearts, and souls glow brighter this Diwali and beyond!
