There are two distinct approaches to living our lives:
1. Operate from a position of confidence and security
2. Operate from a position of fear and insecurity
Which one you adopt is a matter of mindset. Overtime, it becomes a part of your personality and has a huge influence on the quality of your life.
We are at our worst when we are operating from a position of fear and insecurity. Our decisions, actions, responses, relationships, and outcomes are all sub-optimal in this state. And all of these add up over time, dragging us in a vicious cycle.
We are at our best when we are operating from a position of confidence and security. But the ability to do so does not develop overnight. We have to nurture and work on it. I recommend 4 Cs to focus on, for developing this mental muscle:
1. Competence: your knowledge, skills, attitude, ability to generate value, produce results, and communicate them. Study well, work hard, keep learning, keep growing, avoid comfort zones - is all good old basic advice here that works.
2. Character: a strong bedrock of values that aligns with your inner self and guides your decisions, actions, and conduct on a day to day basis. But more importantly, in high-stakes ambiguous situations. Do you have a few values that you would stand by no matter what?
3. Cash: #1 and #2 will mostly make sure that you earn enough. But the critical thing here is to live well within your means and conserve enough so that, at some point, money is not the most important variable in your life's equation. Sadly, it's becoming a harder slope to climb in our consumer-focused society amplified by social media.
4. Community: a solid set of people that you support through thick and thin and who you can trust to support you when needed. This is friends, family, like-minded colleagues, and many beyond that circle who you serve unconditionally. Do you keep track of how you are supporting and enabling others, and who are the people in your ecosystem that you can count upon in different situations?
These 4 Cs compound massively if you learn to practice them early.
