Rethinking AI and empathy

“Empathy is the one human trait AI will never replace,” I had confidently claimed in a talk three years ago.

Little did I know, I’d be proven spectacularly wrong — and fast.

Today, companionship is one of the fastest-growing use cases for AI chatbots.

A staggering 35% of 2.5 billion daily prompts to ChatGPT require an empathetic response.

Think:
▪️ Career guidance
▪️ Relationship/life advice
▪️ Mental health and emotional support
▪️ Personal growth and identity
▪️ Spirituality and meaning of life

I’m not surprised.

Unlike a human, an AI chatbot is always available.

It doesn’t judge you, no matter what you confess.

It speaks fluently about everything from careers to breakups to existential dread.

It pampers you with kindness and rarely asks for anything in return—not even basic civility.

Emotions drive us. And AI has learned to play the part of emotional intelligence — arguably better than many of us.

Of course, these bots don’t feel. They don’t understand emotions. It’s still cold math behind warm words.

But the lines between artificial and authentic are already blurring.

What’s one deeply human trait you believe machines will never master?

I would be empathetic to you if a few years, or months, down the line you turn out to be wrong - I promise😊
