The nice manager trap

Nice Manager Trap.

Many professionals fall for these - managers who seem to be nice on the surface but actually hurt your long term career prospects. It's often too late before you realise how much damage they have done to you and your career.

Look out for these tell-tale signs:

1. They seek and promote loyalty to themselves, not the organisation: it can take various forms - all designed to convince you that you are someone special - but only as long as you work for them. Try breaking away from their loyal gang and see how they bite back. You will become a 'yes-man' for life if you work too long under such managers.

2. They give you 'complete freedom' to do the job: they are likely lazy or incompetent. Ask yourself why do you need this manager? What value are they adding to your life to be your boss?

3. They explain to you every single step of the work every time and expect you to follow it to the last letter: they are micro managers. You would not learn much under them. Learning and growth happens when you apply yourself to a problem with a little bit of guidance/coaching, not when you repeatedly execute a manual of instructions.

4. They always have someone else to blame for everything that goes wrong for you: it's always the policies or the processes, or their boss or someone else who is at fault. Run away fast - this person is not accountable. And if you don't learn how to take accountability, you won't go too far in your career.
