Thinking & Judgment

Knowing the gears is not riding the bike

I bought myself a new bicycle the other day.

Am used to riding but all my previous bikes were gearless. Got this one with gears thinking they would make biking easy in the hilly terrains of my city.

I fully understand the physics of how the gears work and watched a few videos to get practical tips. But to my dismay, in all my recent rides I have struggled to maneuver the gears properly. In fact, there are times when I feel the gears actually work against me when I need them the most during climbs. Those moments are frustrating. Sometimes, its easier to just ride without changing gears.

From my life experience I know that soon I would overcome this phase of struggle. I just have to stay in the game for that to happen. This experience however reiterates three long held beliefs:

1. A fool with a tool is a bigger fool

2. You need practice to master a tool. No amount of theory would help. Period.

3. Just because you have a tool you don't necessarily need to always use it. Some problems can be solved better without a tool.
