The trap of consistent high performance

'Consistent High Performer' is a phrase widely used in performance management discussions.

Every time I hear this from a manager about one of their team members, my natural instinct is to find out how long the two have been working together.

If that duration is more than 2-3 years, it's very likely that a 'Consistent High Performer' tag just perpetuates a marriage of convenience between the manager and the employee where both are basking in their comfort zones.

If you are that 'Consistent high Performer' and are happy about it, I would urge you to rather start getting worried.

Most likely you are either not getting stretched enough in your role or not getting honest feedback.

When circumstances change in the future (which is inevitable) and your manager/ team/ company changes, you may suddenly be in for a rude shock.

You may struggle and realize that you are no longer the God's greatest gift to the mankind - something that your previous manager made you believe you are!

Here is the hard fact about career: the only way to grow consistently is to train your muscles on different terrains. When you do so, you do fall or slow down every once in a while. That is completely OK.

And do remember that you need different coaches to help you master different terrains.

'Consistent High Performer' is a misnomer that fools you more than anyone else.
