A role is more than its label

It's very different from what I thought it would be.

Said a team member who had recently made a cross-functional move to take up a new role in HR.

She was spending more time doing dashboards, handling employee queries, and managing escalations than 'meaningful people connect' that she thought she would do as a HR professional.

Another young and smart professional falling victim to stereotypes. I said to myself, and then went on to share some guidance.

Anyone who has spent a few years at work understands reasonably well that:

HR is not only about people.
Finance is not only about numbers.
Sales is not only about selling.
Software is not only about codes.
Consulting is not only about CXO advice.
...and so on.

Yet, painfully, many students and young professionals fall for the stereotypes while making career decisions.

All I have to say is that this is curable.

It takes just a few deep conversations with people who are already doing that role to understand the nuances, before you take up the role.

It takes a little bit of patience to let the role evolve so you see the full spectrum of what it has to offer, after you take up the role.

It takes a small dose of introspection and action to shape the role to your liking, before and after you take up the role.
