Why knowing the advice is not enough

Anyone who is even remotely active on Linkedin or for that matter any social media platform, is never short of life and career advice. Such advice is almost a commodity now and dispensing it is a mini industry.

We all know all the right things that must be done for a fab life - wake up early, exercise and meditate daily, eat healthy, do focused work, have a purpose in life, pursue hobbies, keep learning, be with people who stretch and inspire you...and so on.

Yet our lives have not improved at the same rate at which the advice industry has grown.

Why?

For the same reason that smokers continue to smoke despite knowing that it's harmful for them.

Knowledge is just step one in any useful endeavour. Figuring out 'how' and 'when' to apply it - in the context of your unique life, personality, preferences, passions, problems, and even quirks - is the harder part. You must customize the advice. Any customisation needs effort. There are two ways to do this:

1. Intense and honest self reflection
2. Getting a coach or mentor

In my experience, #2 is much easier than #1.
