You must speak for your work

Results or report?

We often chase one of these at the cost of the other.

Some are so focused on driving outcomes and getting results that they rarely report and talk about what they have achieved. They struggle to create a positive buzz about their work, get enough support from their superiors, and inspire their teams - despite doing stellar work.

Some love talking about accomplishments - their own and at times those of others claiming it to be their own. They are so busy promoting themselves that the actual work suffers. They may glide for a while but sooner or later get exposed for lack of tangible results.

In this age, it's a foolish strategy to 'Let your work speak for itself'. You must speak for your work.

Moot question is: how much?

In my experience, the 80:20 rule comes in handy here.

80% time focused on sweating it out and getting results.

20% time focused on promoting it so you can get the right support and recognition, find collaboration opportunities, attract good talent, and keep your team excited about what they are accomplishing. The positivity that you thus generate builds on itself and is constantly fueled by the results you produce.
